Bite-sized knowledge for the hungrily curious

Which came first – Burger King or Dairy Queen?

The Answer

Dairy Queen is older than Burger King by 14 years.

It’s Blizzard vs. Whopper in this showdown between two fast-food heavyweights. (actually the Whopper was released in 1957 and the Blizzard didn’t arrive until 1985.)

Dairy Queen opened its first location in Joliet, Illinois in June of 1940. Today there are over 6,000 Dairy Queen locations around the world, in 21 countries. The International Dairy Queen company is owned by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Burger King first opened in Miami in 1954. There are nearly 18,000 Burger King locations in the world. Burger King went through a number of ownership changes over the years. In 2014, Burger King Worldwide merged with Tim Hortons to form Restaurant Brands International.

Bonus Biscuit – Why are some Dairy Queen signs feature the word “Brazier”?

A brazier is a charcoal grill and was selected as the name for DQ® stores offering burgers in 1957, when one of our Territory Operators worked to develop a food system that would work for all DQ® restaurants. The term ‘Brazier®’ itself was the result of a brainstorming session with his advertising agency.
